Advent Music

This little known Advent song is one of the best songs about HOPE I know. It is quiet and gentle just like that first Christmas so long ago. But yet it encompasses the most powerful message of the season. HOPE is born AGAIN, by Jim Brickman.

Today is the Second Sunday of Advent and our attention is turned to PEACE. Into a world filled with so much strife and unrest our Saviour comes as the Source of Peace. Be ready today to be a peacemaker.

Good Chrisian Friends Rejoice also known as In Dulci Jubilo (In sweet joy) gets 2 different treatments. The first is a happy dance and the other is a classic organ meditation. In this crazy time let's focus on the things that bring us JOY!

Today on the 4th Sunday of Advent we focus on "Love" and how much God has loved us.

Today we have a guest organist - a laptop computer playing a pipe organ. Ok I programmed the computer. This video (from 2014) shows off the new pipe organ at Paulin Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Today we have the "overworked" hymn tune "Hyfydol" using the words "Come, thou long expected Jesus. Gordon Young meanders around hinting at the tune as a way of teasing us - but then isn't Advent like that? But when he gives us the tune - it is in all its full glory.

Grant to us, Peace is my first attempt at arranging music for handbells. This piece is designed as a duet with 5 handbells and 5 handchimes which can be rehearsed separately without sharing instruments. We pray "Grant to us, Peace".

Today to we are setting the nativity scene up. This is a Fontanini nativity set, I have added a new figure each year. The music is arranged by Michael Ryan.

Although the text is set around the parable of the wise and foolish virgins - this tune has become associated with Advent and many of its images are appropriate for this season of waiting and preparing.

We are getting closer to Christmas and the music is reflecting that change. Today we look to the feed box of the animals for the Saviour of the World.

Today the BELLS have their day. We have had angels, shepherds and even drummers. Now the bells ring their joyous celebration!!!!

Did you know "The first noel" is really an Epiphany song not a Christmas Song. It is a musical journey of the Wise Travellers and us as we get closer to their feast day.

When I play this arrangement I picture a jazz trio on stage in a basement, smoke filled, small jazz bar.

I love this charming little Epiphany Carol especially on an organ which has a Zimblestern (the twinkling stars that you will hear)

How do you tell the Christmas story to a people who don't have sheep, shepherds, gold, frankincense and myrrh? You include the moose, bear, rabbit, tribal chiefs. Today's carol does just that.

There is a tradition where the Wise Travellers arrived on ships (not camels or horses). I hope the ships were the Lusitania, Titanic, and Fitzgerald...

We wander and we wonder about the miracle that is the birth of God Among Us. We see the wonders of creation of the world that God so loved!

JS. Bach gives us a delicate arrangement of the carol "Good Christian friends rejoice". I love to add the zimblestern (when I have one) to this arrangement. INJoy...

It is amazing how often things happen at midnight. Here we are on the brink of a new year and reflecting on that midnight many years ago in Bethlehem. Keep the spirit of Christmas into the new year.
